Development and primary bioinformatics analysis of ‘Mishi Paanak’ – An Ayurveda-inspired cooling drink

Seasonal variations have a profound impact on human physiology. According to Ayurveda, Grishma Ritu (summer) is associated with excessive heat and dehydration. The intense sun rays dry up the environment, especially in hot geoclimatic regions like India, leading to increased Pitta dosha and a greater risk of heat-related health issues like dehydration. Ayurveda emphasizes the consumption of sweet, cold, liquid, and unctuous foods to maintain balance and prevent dehydration during intense summers. Inspired by these principles, Mishi Paanak has been developed as a natural summer coolant to provide hydration, restore energy, and soothe the effects of summer heat. While not mentioned in classical Ayurvedic texts, this innovative beverage is formulated using fennel seeds (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.), known as Mishi, which aids digestion and has a cooling effect, along with poppy seeds (Papaver somniferum), which offer relaxation and cooling properties. Watermelon juice (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) i.e. Kalingada Phala, is incorporated for its hydrating and replenishing properties, while natural sweeteners like Khanda Sharkara (rock candy) or Guda (jaggery) provide nourishment and sustained energy. Prepared with water, this refreshing and nourishing drink serves as an effective way to combat dehydration and heat-induced fatigue. Regular consumption of Mishi Paanak can help maintain electrolyte balance, prevent weakness, and offer a healthy alternative to aerated and processed beverages. Its easy preparation, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with Ayurvedic principles make it an ideal choice for individuals seeking natural hydration solutions during the summer season. The network pharmacology-based analysis of the contents of this drink shows prominent gene targets for management of dehydration.
